Get To Know Las Vegas
Located at the southwest tip of Nevada, in the Mojave desert, Las Vegas is internationally known as a center for world-class entertainment, fine dining, and large gambling casinos. It ranks as one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations.
But Las Vegas is more than gambling and entertainment. If you are arriving early or staying after Fellows 2024, you can enjoy many nearby attractions. The city is home to several museums, such as the Neon Museum (with the city’s historical signs from the mid-20th century), The Mob Museum, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, and the Discovery Children's Museum. Check out the extensive Downtown Arts District (dubbed the least Vegas neighborhood in Vegas), with numerous galleries and events, and Brewery Row, a cluster of craft breweries. Don’t forget the Fremont Street Experience, a five-block entertainment district that has a free light show every night, and the STRAT Observation Deck 1,149 feet above the Las Vegas Strip tocatch the best views of the city. And in the midst of it all, the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, a sovereign nation, has a reservation adjacent to the northwest corner of the city.
Beyond the city limits is a world to explore. Just 17 miles from the strip is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a breathtaking 195,000 acres that offers a scenic drive, miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and more. Or take an hour drive to the Valley of Fire State Park,world-renowed for its 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone. And, of course, about 30 miles outside of Las Vegas is the Hoover Dam, sitting 900 feet above the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Built in the 1930s, the dam created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, and made life in the Las Vegas Valley possible.
